Pressure Sensitive Labels
What is a pressure sensitive label?
Sometimes referred to as stickers or decals, pressure sensitive labels can be made of paper, films, and foils. They come with an adhesive that only requires a light pressure to apply, or stick them to a surface. Used on a broad range of products, pressure sensitive labels can be found in nearly every industry including food, beverage, automotive, cosmetic, tobacco, healthcare, and many more.
Why are product labels so important to brand owners and Consumers?
Pressure sensitive labels are key when it comes to product marketing and packaging. Your products label is the first thing a customer sees. It highlights the logos, colors, and shapes that bring attraction to the minds of the people, which greatly improves the chances of your product being purchased. Also containing vital information such as ingredients, warnings, expiration dates, and directions for use; product labels are an essential component of any products packaging.
What factors need to be considered when ordering labels?
There are many things to consider when ordering labels that are critical to the performance of the label.
-Will the label be exposed to moisture or chemicals?
-Will it be exposure to direct sunlight?
-Will the label need to withstand outdoor conditions?
-Will it be used in a cold or hot environments such as a freezer or heat lamps? If so, will it be applied at those temps or will it be applied at normal temps?
-Is the label machine applied or hand applied? If machine applied, what copy position and core size is needed? What is the max roll OD?
-What will the label be applied to?
-Will the labels ever need to be removed?
-Does the label need to be printable with a thermal or any other type of printer?
-Do you need to be able to write on the label?
-Does the label need to be able to tear?
These questions will help us determine what materials to use for your label to ensure that it not only looks great but performs well and withstands the specific application.
The materials list below will give you a general idea of what there is to choose from. Each of these options can be made with different adhesives, coatings, laminates, and liners to ensure that no matter what the labels specific needs are, we have a solution to work perfectly!
75% of all pressure sensitive labels are printed on some form of paper stock.
Our most popular paper stock substrate is White Semi Gloss. From simple 1 color warning labels, to fancy 8 color product labels, Semi Gloss is the most cost-effective go-to option.
Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is our most commonly used film. Having a bright white base coat makes white BOPP the pick of choice for colorful designs in which print quality is a top priority. With its water-resistant plastic properties, BOPP is perfect for labels that are prone to water exposure. Even without lamination, BOPP is too durable to be easily torn. Although, BOPP is used most often, there are several other white films that depending on your labels specific needs may be a better fit. Ex: PET, HDPE, PE, PVC
Clear (transparent) film has many interesting and creative uses. Achieve the “no label look” on your products container without the cost of screen printing directly on the container.
Show off your product by allowing it to be seen though the clear label. Create the illusion of a custom shape die line on a rectangle label. With the use of opaque white underprint we can make certain elements and colors opaque and bold, and other elements see through. Like white film, clear BOPP is most commonly used. However, there are several other clear films we can use if the labels application or environment requires it.
Regency’s most frequently used, and recommended material category. Create stunning work of art by adding a metallic shine to any pantone color or CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color combination. OR BOTH!
Using the same Opaque white underprint technique as mentioned above, we can print white ink under areas that shine is not wanted and leave off the white under areas that are to be metallic and shiny. We can also print dot percentages of the white underprint to control the amount of shine that the foil puts off.
The most used and stocked, metallic film here at Regency is Silver BOPP.
The most irresistible and deluxe metallic film we offer is Rainbow Holographic BOPP. Although it’s the most expensive option, its shimmering, eye catching colors are a sure way to make your product stand out on the shelf increasing the odds of being chosen by the consumer. Printing 4 color process, 2 PMS colors, and 2 spot varnish finishes on this holographic material is about the most extravagant you can get. We specialize is this combination and that’s why we refer to it as “The Regency Special”. Contact us now to get started on your own work of art!
Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer printing is good way for you to print your own labels in house. Great for variable data, shipping, bar code labels, and many other uses. We can simply supply you with blank die cut rolls or we can pre-print your logo or any design elements and leave room for you to print your own content on demand at your facility. In label printing, “color separations” means that each color within the artwork has been divided into four basic ink colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black – CMYK) to create that color. Each color is printed separately in layers, creating a full-color label.
4 color process 4 color process is used in label printing with photographic images. The four colors are combined to recreate color. Always double check that art is colored correctly using CMYK process colors, and/or Pantone Matching System (PMS) Solid Coated numbers. RGB files cannot be used and must be converted into CMYK, which may result in color shifts. Color contract proofs can be provided at additional cost if required. In label printing, the “Corner radius” is the measurement of the curve that a label’s corners has, expressed in decimal form. A normal radius is 0.125″ – the higher the corner radius, the more curve it has. The most common corner radius for label printing, Regency uses is 1/8”. To set a corner radius in Illustrator, select “Illustrator, Preferences, General,” and change the value of Corner Radius to the desired amount. You can also choose the round corner rectangle tool, click on the Art Board and set the dimensions and the corner radius.
